Mark 16 vs 19

After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and He sat at the right hand of God. (Mark 16:19)

It is plain from Scripture that Jesus’ ascension was a literal and bodily return to heaven. He rose up from the ground gradually and was received into a cloud while His disciples and other astonished onlookers gazed in wonder. Then two angels appeared and said to them: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).

Christ in His famous Olivet discourse warned us about His future second coming, right after He had predicted that many “false christs” would come, deceiving many (Matthew 24:24). He cautioned them ahead of time not to listen to these false prophets, “Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it” (Matthew 24:26).

One point to reflect on, is, that we should correctly understand that when we say for Jesus to come into our heart that we clearly understand that He is there symbolically in the presence of the indwelling Spirit of Christ. In this way, “God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts” (Galatians 4:6) so that “Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith” (Ephesians 3:17).

Jesus had told His disciples that He was going to prepare a place for them and for all believers John 14:2-3. And in John 16:7-15, Jesus told the disciples that He had to go away and He would send the Holy Spirit. So the coming of the Holy Spirit in the upper room on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13) was proof positive that Jesus was indeed in heaven seated at the right hand of God. This is confirmed in Romans 8:34 where the Apostle Paul writes that Christ is sitting at God’s right hand making intercession for us.

Another point to focus on is when we celebrate communion in remembrances of what Jesus did for us. We need to understand that the whole context of the last supper is symbolic. We do not partake of Jesus by physically eating His body and drinking His blood. Rather, we partake of Jesus by coming to Him in faith, trusting that His broken body and shed blood on the cross was sufficient to pay for our sins. The elements of bread and wine commemorate His broken body and shed blood, and when we eat them, we affirm our faith in Christ.

After His resurrection and ascension into heaven, Jesus took on the role of our great High Priest, interceding on behalf of believers before God the Father (Hebrews 4:14-16). As High Priest, Jesus serves as the mediator between God and man, having offered Himself as the perfect and final sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

Currently, the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ is physically present in heaven, seated on the cosmic throne next to God the Father in royal splendor, power, and majesty as the glorified God-man. The Bible says that because Jesus lives forever, His priesthood will never end (Hebrews 7:23-25). This means that He continues to be our advocate before the Father, pleading our case when we sin and fail.

Hebrews 7:25 declares, “Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.” And, Romans 8:27 says: “He makes intercession for the saints according to God’s will.”

The Bible contains numerous prophecies about Jesus Christ’s eventual return to earth. Several Old Testament prophets, including Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Zechariah, foretold that the Messiah would one day come back to establish God’s kingdom on earth (Isaiah 9:6-7; Jeremiah 23:5-6; Zechariah 14:4-9).

We need to understand that the Lord Jesus Christ, still in His physical but now immortal body, is at “the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3) and will remain there until He returns physically back to earth to establish His millennium kingdom and to fulfill all the remaining promises in the Scriptures.

So according to the Bible, Jesus was resurrected after dying on the cross and ascended into heaven (Acts 1:9-11). He now sits at the right hand of God the Father (Mark 16:19; Ephesians 1:20), and is expected to descend bodily back to earth at some future point.

Additionally, Jesus Himself made several statements affirming His future return (Matthew 24:27-31; John 14:3). The New Testament writers also frequently mentioned Christ’s second coming and ultimate triumph over evil (Titus 2:13; Hebrews 9:28; 2 Peter 3:3-4).

The Bible refers to this event as the “second coming” because it will be a second time of Jesus personally appearing on earth in human form. Until this takes place, Jesus expresses His unlimited authority both in heaven and across the earth by perpetually interceding for His people (Romans 8:34) and pouring out the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:33) until the glorious consummation when Christ hands over the kingdom to God the Father (1 Corinthians 15:24-28). Amen!

HOW TO LIVE A FRUITFUL LIFE – John 15:5

John 15 vs 5

Jesus told His disciples, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit…” (John 15:5).

To bear much fruit means to live in such a way that I am always found to be in Him, to walk hand in hand with Him and to live according to His Word, “If you abide in Me, and my words abide in you …” (John 15:7).

A fruitful life results in obedience to the Father, by walking in His ways and leading others to trust in Jesus, to give them a desire to follow Him because of the example they see in you. That’s the kind of fruit that will last forever. It’s also the kind of fruit that brings glory to God (John 15:8).

The Lord Jesus Himself tells His disciples at their last meal together, “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples…You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you” (John 15:8, 16).

If you are a child of God, your purpose in this life is to bear fruit. What Jesus wants most in the lives of His children is not just fruit, but “much fruit.”

So how can I bear fruit? The fruit of the Spirit can only come forth in me by the power of the Spirit. No amount of self-effort will bear spiritual fruit. It requires a total surrender of my self-will to God so that I can obey Jesus’ words in the daily situations of life, in order for the fruit of the Spirit to come forth instead of my own nature. Such a total surrender occurs when Jesus is my first love, and reigns in my heart and mind. When it is His will, His Word that is done in my life, and not my own will; then the bearing of fruit, the fruit of the Spirit, the fruit of obeying Jesus’ words will come forth quite naturally.

Jesus told His disciples: “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn-bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them” (Matthew 7:16-20).

If you’re producing fruit of the Spirit, you will attract men and women into the presence of God by your very life. And, as we live the Christian life in dependency on the Holy Spirit, two things will become evident in us.

  1. We treasure God’s Word because, when we value something, we think about it, study it, and learn all we can about it. By studying the Bible, we learn about God’s character, plans, and promises. Scripture meditation develops our ability to think biblically and deepens our relationship with the Lord. One of the indications that we treasure His Word is a change in behavior, decisions will increasingly be guided by His principles, and actions will reflect the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
  2. We adorn ourselves with kindness and truth, since these two virtues are to be our constant companions. God’s truth has the power to expose ungodly attitudes and behaviors, not only in us but also in others. When this happens, kindness helps to protect relationships from damage. What’s more, it can prevent discord and division in churches. God wants us to speak the truth to one another and while dong so, to make sure we do it with loving compassion.

As we walk with the Lord, He’ll grow His fruit in us and teach us to follow Him. In one of His parables, Jesus talks about three men who were entrusted with resources. The first two men maximized their resources and ended up with more than they started. The third man buried what he was given in a hole.

The first two men receive the same words of approval, “Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21, 23). The third man is criticized for not doing more with what he had. When we use our time, energy, money, skills, and relationships to advance the gospel of Jesus, we are maximizing our resources, investing in eternity, and living a fruitful life.

Romans 14:12 says that, “each of us will give a personal account to God.” One day God is going to evaluate our lives to see how fruitful we have been with what we were given. If we know that day is coming, it would be wise to plan ahead for it. So the question is . . . are you living a fruitful life?

Keep in mind that the Father’s desire is to transform us into the image of Christ (Romans 8:29) and make us as fruitful as He was. In our allegiance to Him, we want to be characterized by good works (Ephesians 2:10; Titus 2:7; Colossians 1:10), humility (Ephesians 4:2; Titus 3:2), and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32; Colossians 3:13). We want to always be ready to “give an account for the hope that is within us (1 Peter 3:15). We desire to be the “good soil” Jesus spoke of in the Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13:3-9. Therefore, living a fruitful life is what every disciple of Christ should desire.

The result of spiritual fruitfulness is that God is glorified, we grow, and others come to know Christ, this is the ultimate fruitfulness for a child of God (Matthew 5:16; Mark 16:15).

Remember that in the end, the pleasures and passions of the world are nothing compared to the beauty and blessing of knowing God, and having the Holy Spirit living in the believer because, as the ending of the verse says, “apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

GOD REVEALS HIS PLANS IN THE BIBLE – Deuteronomy 29:29

The Bible says in Deuteronomy 29:29, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

First, God never makes know everything to man, since there are some things only God knows. There are secret things that God will probably only disclose when we are living with Him in eternity since the secret things belong to the Lord our God.

Second, God does reveal some things to man but to those things that are revealed, we must pay strict attention to. Though God is mysterious, and certain “secret things” belong only to Him, He has chosen to reveal Himself to humanity through His Word (2 Timothy 3:16–17; 2 Peter 1:20–21). More specifically, God has chosen to make Himself known to us through His Son, Jesus (John 1:14; Hebrews 1:1-3). God wants us to learn and know more about Him as we live our lives (Matthew 11:28-30).

Third, God’s revelation is meant to say something to us since there is a message which belongs to us. So, even though people can never gain knowledge of “the secret things [that] belong to the Lord,” they do have access to what is clearly revealed in His Word about who God is and how He wants them to live.

Fourth, God’s revelation is for all generations. Yes, God had a specific message for Moses’ generation, but the message goes beyond its original audience to speak to all generations which follow. We are responsible to pass on what God has revealed to our children, to “bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).

Fifth, God’s revelation is eternal. Not only do His words last forever, but they are eternally important.

Finally, God’s revelation must matter to us since He has spoken to us to affect the way we live. If we are only hearers of the word, and not doers also, then we have not really received His word. God desires obedience from us. When He reveals His will, He expects us to live accordingly.

Imagine going through life without the Word of God. You wouldn’t know what’s going on or where things are heading, you wouldn’t know where you came from or where you are going. You would not understand the rebirth of the nation of Israel or what is going on in the world.

With all that is happening in this world – all the pain, suffering, and sorrows – you wouldn’t have hope. And the greatest tragedy of all would be you wouldn’t know there was One who came into the world to provide a way to a place where sorrow, pain, suffering, and death will never take place again (Revelation 21:4).

The true and living God, the God of the Bible, dwells outside of time. He knows and has declared to man how things began and how things will end and how we should live in the meantime. He has told mankind of His plan of redemption after the fall in the garden. He has told mankind of the nation and people through whom He would choose to send the Savior of the world. He has told how this Savior would be born, where He would be born, where He would live, how He would die, and that He would be resurrected. And He put all this in His Holy Book.

Knowing that “the secret things belong to the Lord” can help us remember that God knows and sees all things. If something happens in our life that we do not understand we need to trust in Him since He has promised to work even the most difficult circumstances for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

There are many ways by which we can approach God’s Word, but the most important one is with a desire to obey it. For the Christian, we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). We are to walk by the Spirit and bear spiritual fruit, fleeing from sin and towards God.

God has revealed Himself to us by disclosing His attributes, character, ways, plans, purposes and promises in Scripture. As we read we see how He worked among His people, and the promises that He gave them are the same He gives to us. Therefore, “trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).  Remember that it is never too late to begin to follow Jesus.

Even though there are many things we don’t know that only God knows, we are thankful to Him for those things that He has revealed to us and we ask Him to further open our ears (Proverbs 1:5), eyes (Psalm 119:18) and minds (Luke 24:45) to understand Him more each day and to serve Him with a loving and humble heart. And as we search the Scriptures, with the leading of the Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth, our understanding of God will grow, our love for our Redeemer will deepen, and our faith will be strengthened.

Our prayer is that this will be a breakthrough year in your life, one that you will look back on and remember as a turning point in your walk with God, and that He richly bless you beyond what you can think or imagine.

The world is full of chaos and uncertainty, but we can be in peace knowing that God has us in the palm of His mighty hands and that He is in control of everything. This brings peace and comfort in troubling times!

Therefore, let’s remember what Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

ENCOURAGING WORDS FROM THE LORD FOR A NEW BEGINNING

ENCOURAGING WORDS - 2024

At the beginning of a New Year many people make new resolutions and looked upon them as the chance for a fresh start and hope for better results in whatever they have set their goal to accomplish.

However, we must understand that this time of year is not the only time for a new beginning; every day is an opportunity to start anew. Consequently, new beginnings offer a chance to leave behind the old and embrace the new (Galatians 2:20).

During these times, it is natural to feel uncertain or anxious; however, the Bible offers hope and encouragement through the word of God. It reminds us that we have the opportunity to start again with God’s grace and guidance. Whether you are facing a major life change or simply seeking a fresh start, the following verses offer comfort, wisdom, and encouragement.

One such verse is found in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and he will make your paths straight.”

This is an important verse that reminds us to trust in God’s plan and rely on His wisdom knowing that He will guide us towards the right path.

Another powerful verse is found in Isaiah 43:18-19, telling us to: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

This verse reassures us that God is always doing a new thing in our lives, even in the midst of difficult circumstances He is making new ways when we least expect them. Therefore, leave the past behind and embrace the new thing that God is doing in your life. Have faith, and trust that He is working all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

God tells us: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

In this verse we are reminded that even when we cannot see the way forward, God has a plan for our life.

Throughout Scripture we are reminded that with God’s grace, we can find forgiveness, healing, and a fresh start. His words encourage us to trust in God’s plan for our life and to remain steadfast in our faith as we navigate new ways. Remember that God is with you every step, and with His guidance you can embrace new opportunities and find hope in fresh starts.

As you embark on a new beginning, hold fast to these scriptural promises. Let them uplift your spirit and strengthen your resolve to embrace new opportunities with confidence and hope.

When you feel weighed down by your mistakes, the Bible offers hope and assurance that you can begin again with a clean start. Starting afresh often involves letting go of the past and seeking forgiveness and healing. The following verses remind us of God’s grace and His willingness to give us a clean start when we repent and seek His forgiveness.

  • “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
  • “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).
  • “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord” (Acts 3:19).
  • “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

Allow these verses to penetrate, renew your spirit and remind you of the freedom that comes with a fresh start in God. Accept His forgiveness and begin again with a clean start.

As you set out on your journey towards a new beginning, may these Bible verses serve as a source of inspiration and strength, remembering that with God on your side, anything is possible (Philippians 4:13).

Let go of the past, remembering that embracing new opportunities requires courage, faith, and a willingness to step out of our comfort zones. These next verses remind us to trust in God’s guidance, to seek His wisdom, and to have faith as we step into new opportunities.

  • “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established” (Proverbs 16:3).
  • “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

As you begin this New Year, embrace the promise of new beginnings; trust in God’s plan for your life, and let His Word guide you in your journey towards a brighter future.

Our prayer is that this will be a breakthrough year in your life that you will look back on and remember this time right now as a turning point in your walk with God. May He richly bless you beyond what you can think and imagine.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

2 Corinthians 5:17

Wishing you a blessed and victorious New Year!

JESUS OUR BEST FRIEND – John 15:13-15

John 15 vs 13-15 - Jesus our best Friend

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. (John 15:13-15)

In Jesus’ time it was unusual to have a friendship relationship between a disciple and his rabbi, yet Jesus called His disciples / servants friends. They were friends because Jesus didn’t keep secrets from them, but openly revealed what He had received from God the Father.

Jesus is telling His disciples that He loves them so much that He would do anything for them, even die for them. And He wants them to love each other in the same way (John 13:34-35).

So, when we read this verse, we need to remember that Jesus is the ultimate example of love. He showed us how much He loved us by dying on the cross for our sins. And when we show love to others, we are following His example.

Did you know that Jesus can be our best Friend if we believe in Him? Once we learn about what Jesus did for us and we make Him the Lord and Savior of our life He will become our best Friend.

A best friend is one who loves you just the way you are, and yet helps you to be all you can be. Jesus is my best Friend because no one has ever loved me as He does. Jesus loved me so much that He gave His life for me so that I will be able to spend eternity with Him (John 3:16). Jesus said, “Greater love has no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

Since Jesus is the Son of God, He is a holy God and He wants us to be holy also. God tells us to be holy because He is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16). Therefore, when we are friends with Jesus, He changes us from our old sinful self and gives us a new and a holy spirit and we become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). We become more like Him every day as we study the Bible and obey what He teaches us.

Jesus wants only what is best for us and that is what a true friend does. He will guide you in making decisions if you ask for His help and trust in Him. Wherever I go, the Lord Jesus goes with me. Whatever I watch, the Lord Jesus watches it with me. Whatever I listen to, the Lord Jesus listens to it also. If I truly love Jesus, I will not want to do anything that displeases my best Friend.

Jesus wants us to talk to Him, come to Him during our times of trouble, and build a loving, long-lasting friendship with Him. Jesus is our best friend because He listens to us and has our best interest in mind. We can get in touch with Him instantly, directly and personally at any time of day or night, in any situation or circumstances either verbally or silently. In Psalm 5:3 we read: “In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.”

Jesus promised to never leave or forsake His people repeatedly throughout scripture (Deuteronomy 31:6, Hebrews 13:5). Jesus promises that no matter what you face in life you can always count on Him to be by your side, guiding you along the way. He will never abandon you, leave you feeling lonely, or let you fight your battles on your own. Jesus instead is a real friend that will encourage you, lift you up, and help you through both the good and dark times in your life. When you develop a relationship with Jesus, you will feel a sense of comfort because you know He is walking alongside you.

Once we see all the things that a friendship with Jesus offers, we recognize that He is the best friend that we could ever have, since a truly happy life is made possible only when we choose to have a friendship with Him!

No one cares for me like Jesus. He wants me to talk to Him about everything that concerns me, is always ready to listen to me, to help me, to encourage me and is truly the best Friend I could ever have.

If I find myself in trouble my best Friend is always there to help me. Jesus and I are best Friends forever, but I must never forget who He is. He is my Creator and He created the entire world, He is my Savior, my Lord, and my God, and I will always treat Him with respect and reverence; because His Holy Spirit lives inside of me.

In conclusion, John 15:13 is a powerful verse about love and sacrifice. It teaches us that the greatest love we can show is to care for others in such a way that we would do anything to protect them, even if it meant risking our own lives. And when we show love like this, we are following the example of Jesus, who loved us so much that He died for us. So let’s go and show love to the people around us, in big and small ways, and make the world a better place to live, every day of or life!

ARE YOU ANTICIPATING CHRIST’S RETURN? – Revelation 22:12-13

Revelation 22 vs 12-13

“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:12-13)

As we prepare for the Christmas season, who is it we are waiting for?

Jesus first came to earth as a baby over 2,000 years ago, but the exact year and date are uncertain. He was born in a humble stable in the town of Bethlehem (Luke 2:4). When Jesus comes again, nobody will know except the Lord. Not even the angels will be able to predict the date. Matthew 24:36 says “But of that a day and hour known, no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” He will however, return to earth by coming down from the heavens (Mathew 24:30, Acts 1:11) but this time as the Lion of Judah and a warrior King.

John also tells us in the revelations of Jesus Christ that, “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).

As we think on these verses and look back at the promises of God’s redemptive plan and consider our place in that timeline of history we realize that the imminent return of Jesus draws nearer every breath we take. Therefore if we are anticipating the return of Jesus at any moment, it should radically change how we live, as well as giving our mission and outlook in life a much deeper purpose.

One of the reasons being is, that as we anticipate the return of Christ our priorities will become less self-focused and more Kingdom-focused. Meaning, why would we pile up resources to use for our own pleasure and temporal joys when the world needs Jesus. Please understand that focusing on the mission that God has given all believers doesn’t make us loose the joy of life, but it will certainly prevent us from wasting our resources without caring for the lost world that is perishing around us.

Throughout Scripture we find admonitions given to us about the Lord’s return. The Lord said repeatedly that we are to watch for His coming because we do not know the day or hour of His return (Matthew 24:42; Matthew 25:13). In Luke 21:36, Jesus gave this specific instruction: “Keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”

We are to do more than pray as we watch, and to stand fast in the faith with courage and strength (1 Corinthians 16:13). We are to watch soberly, arming ourselves with faith, love, and salvation (1 Thessalonians 5:8). As we watch, we are to remain especially aware of false prophets. We are to discern the spirits and to reject soundly all who do not confess that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh (2 Peter2:1; 1 John 4:1-2).

Jesus spoke to John in a vision and gave this great promise to those who remain watchful: “Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake” (Revelation 16:15).

We are to be the Lord’s witnesses, telling of the love of God and the atoning death of Jesus Christ because God calls us to win souls. We are to testify about what He has done in our own lives, both with our words and by our example. So long as there remains a soul on earth who hasn’t heard the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, we have work to do! We must grow in spiritual discernment and in the wisdom of God. Our faith must be strengthened and used so that our prayers and our actions more effectively build up the Lord’s kingdom.

The return of Christ is always presented in Scripture as a great motivation to action, not as a reason to cease from action. Some, unaware of God’s words are tempted to stop what they are doing and just “wait,” when Jesus himself said in the parable of the ten talents, to keep working “until I come back” (Luke 19:13).

We believe that the return of Jesus Christ is imminent, that is, His return could occur at any moment; therefore, along with the apostle Paul, we look for “the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).

The apostles lived and served with the idea that Jesus could return within their lifetime; if they had ceased from their labors and just “waited,” they would have been in disobedience to Christ’s command to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15), and the gospel would not have been spread.

The apostles understood that Jesus’ imminent return meant they must busy themselves with God’s work. They lived life to the fullest, as if every day were their last. We, too, should view every day as a gift and use it to glorify God.

Remember, Christ could come at any moment. We believe this with all our heart, because of what we read in Scripture. And when the Lion of the tribe of Judah returns He will make all things new. There will be no more death, no more tears, and no more pain for the former things will have passed away and the believer will live with the Lord forever.

As you celebrate the birth of our Savior please remember that His return is imminent, so be prepared and alert!

Maranatha, come, Lord Jesus!

HOW SHOULD WE RUN THE RACE THAT IS SET BEFORE US? – Hebrews 12:1-3

Hebrews 12 vs 1-3

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. (Hebrews 12:1-3)

Runners in a marathon follow a clearly marked course; therefore, if you’re running a marathon, you can’t make up your own course. If you stray from the course, you’ll be disqualified.

Life’s race is “set before us;” we did not select the course, for it is God who established it. God is the Sovereign One who sets the course for each of us, just as He set the course of the cross for Jesus. So we need to remember that the race we run is for Christ.

We stay the course in spite of trials and persecutions (Hebrews 12:4–11), and as we run, we must “fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Because He perfectly finished His race, He is the focus of our lives. We must look away from all distractions because He is already at the finish line waiting for us and “will render to each one according to his deeds” (Romans 2:6).

To finish the Christian marathon, it’s important to keep in mind at all times that the Sovereign God sets the course. We may not like parts of the course and may be prone to complain, “Why did the course have to go over this canyon, or through this swamp?” The answer is, “because the Sovereign God planned it this way.” Therefore, we will not be able to run by faith unless we submit our will to His will.

But suppose you decide to pick your own path, still running the set number of miles, but you run through smooth roads and luxurious meadows. This plan seems excellent, but when you cross the finish line, there won’t be a medal or a prize waiting for you.

We do the same thing when we decide the course for our life instead of running the race God has set for us. It is only by submitting to His will, doing what He says and going where He leads, that we remain on the right path.

For believers, the finish line is heaven; however, the difference is what we have to show for during our time on earth. Regardless of how grand a legacy someone leaves, the only truly lasting and worthwhile deeds are those done for the Lord and in the power of His Spirit.

Thank God, no matter how far off course we may veer, the Holy Spirit is still present. He reminds us of the right path and also provides us the power to get back on it and persevere. Our route is marked out and our choice is clear, therefore, we need to run the race set before us and finish well (Acts 20:24).

So how do we do this? The main way to do this, is to “run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.”

Let us never forget that following the course set by the Holy Spirit brings great rewards.

Jesus finished the course of faith perfectly, showing us how to finish well. He also brings our faith to completion, as Paul states, “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

HOW DO WE OBTAIN DISCERNMENT – Romans 12:2

Romans 12 vs 2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

Discernment is the ability to make sound judgments by perceiving what is not readily obvious but critical to our Christian life. Discernment is necessary to understand spiritual truth, live as God intends, avoid life’s pitfalls and dangers, and properly live every day of our life.

For example, what should you do when you want to follow the Lord but have multiple choices that appear promising and good? How can you know if you’re hearing from God or simply listening to your own desires?

In Proverbs we read: “If you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding,” (Proverbs 2:3-6). These verses are a clear promise from God that when we ask for insight, He will answer.

To the Christians in Rome (Romans 12), Paul is urging them to respond to God’s mercy, His forgiveness of our sin, and His inclusion of us in His family. The appropriate reaction would be offering to Him our entire lives as a form of living sacrifice.

Next, Paul writes that we must no longer be conformed to the world. The word “world” is often used in the New Testament to refer to the “world system,” or the way that every human being lives by default. John described this worldly way of living as “the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life” (1 John 2:16).

Paul tells us to abandon the pursuit for pleasure, possessions, and status and to stop living like everyone else. Instead, he urges us to be transformed from the inside out. Specifically, he writes that we must be changed in how we think, to have our minds renewed so that we can begin to understand God’s will for our lives.

God may continue to provide us with pleasure, possessions, and status in various forms, but he urges us to learn how to look at life with a new question: What does God want for me? What is truly a good, acceptable, and perfect use of my life for His purposes and not just for my own?

Though discernment doesn’t appear overnight, it does develop when we “search for her as for hidden treasures” (Proverbs 2:4). So don’t wait until you’re facing a critical decision, start asking the Lord for His wisdom today. We need time to practice this kind of humility so we’ll learn to hear His voice among the noises of life. And in the meantime, rest assured that no matter what decision you make, God will be with you (Psalm 139:7-12).

Remember that when we view God’s insight as a precious treasure, He reveals all we need to know. Gaining discernment or sound judgment involves trusting in the Lord, not depending on our own understanding, and seeking God’s will (Proverbs 3:5-6).

So how do we obtain biblical discernment?

  • Believers receive discernment by reading and meditating on the Word of God and through the renewal of the mind.
  • The Bible teaches believers to seek discernment in order to grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge of spiritual truth.

In conclusion, discernment is the ability to think biblically about all areas of life and is indispensable to an uncompromising life. It is important for the Christian to take hold of the discernment that God has provided for him in His precious truth, because, without it, Christians are at risk of being “tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine” (Ephesians 4:14).

Therefore let us pray as Paul did for the Philippians: That your love may overflow still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may discover the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ (Philippians 1:9-10).

IT IS GOOD TO GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD – Psalm 92:1

Psalm 92 vs 1

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord and to sing praises to Your name, Most High” (Psalm 92:1).

Praising and thanking the Lord reminds us that our attention should be focused on Him, not on ourselves since the world’s demands and stresses will pull us away from our first priority if we aren’t careful.

The psalmist Asaph understood this well. He was troubled by many things “until he entered the sanctuary of God” (Psalm 73:17). Then he remembered that “God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26).

As we see, thanksgiving returns God to His rightful place at the center of our lives as we are reminded of our need for Him.

Communicating gratitude to God reminds us of our absolute dependence on Him. We may think we are in control, and our actions may express the sense of independence we feel. But in reality we must trust in Him as the brother of Jesus, James wrote, for: “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow” (James 1:17).

When we thank God for any one of His gifts, we’re reminded that He is the source of all we have, including life itself and it reinforces our faith as we recall the specific ways that He has answered our prayers, met our needs, and protected us.

He is constantly working in our life by building our faith and trust in Him for all the present and future events that will come our way. Praising the Father for all He is and does, bring relief from the pressures of life, and much-needed peace.

The psalmist recognized our need for refuge at times. The release we experience when we “pour out” the burdens of our hearts to God (Psalm 62:8) contributes greatly to physical, mental, and spiritual health and reminds us that our heavenly Father is the source of the good things in our life.

Remember that our gratitude blesses Him and He’s magnified and glorified by it. So let’s join our voices with the psalmist’s, and say, “In God we have boasted all day long, and we will give thanks to Your name forever” (Psalm 44:8).

Blessings to you and your family as we celebrate our Lord the giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17).
