THOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME – Exodus 20:3

As we read God’s Ten Commandments the very first one refers to “Thou shall have no other gods before me” – Exodus 20:3. The warning is there because throughout human history there were many false gods and continues to this day.

God reiterates this again through Moses in Exodus 34:14 “for you shall not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God”. Beware we have a jealous Creator.

The unfortunate thing is that humans are easily misled and the false teachers are out there deceiving many. The most dangerous of all are spiritual counterfeits i.e. the Emergent Church, the Ecumenical Movement led by the Catholic Church, Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses and many others. These pray on those that do not have a close walk with the Lord and do not search the Bible. We need to be like the Bereans for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. Acts 17:11

The Bible has many warnings and here are some of them:

  • Matthew 7:15“Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”
  • Matthew 24:24“For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.”
  • 2 Corinthians 11:4 – There are those who preach “another Jesus whom we have not preached.”
  • Galatians 1:6 – many who come preaching “another gospel” rather than the true saving gospel of Christ.
  • 2 Corinthians 11:26 – There are also counterfeit “Christians” who are “false brethren”.
  • 2 Peter 2:1 – as well as “false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.”
  • 2 Corinthians 11:13“false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ”.
  • Jeremiah 6:14– They preach “peace; when there is no peace”.

Revelation 12:9 states that Satan himself is the greatest counterfeiter, for he “deceives the whole world”, in his attempt to become a counterfeit god.

1 John 4:1 – Thus we are warned to “try the spirits whether they are of God”, and to “prove all things” to test them by God’s Word.

Revelation 22:19 states that men may, in these last days, arrogantly think they can “take away from the words of the book of this prophecy” but such assumption will only “take away their part out of the book of life”.

The Holy Scriptures are always right, since “the grass withers, the flower fades, BUT THE WORD OF OUR GOD STANDS FOREVER.” Isaiah 40:8

WARNING – DO NOT ADD OR TAKE AWAY FROM GOD’S HOLY WORD – Revelation 22:18-19

Because of the increase of prophetic signs, there has been a growing interest in biblical prophecy in the last years. However, many professing Christians, especially those in the mainline denominations continue to reject or ignore the great portions of the Bible dealing with prophecy. This is very sad and unfortunate, because there is a great blessing in the study of these prophecies. “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near.” Revelation 1:3

It is important to know that only the book of Revelation makes a specific promise to this effect. Not only in the verse above, but also at the end of the book in Revelation 22:7 – “Behold, I am coming quickly blessed is he who heeds the words of the prophecy of this book.”

As we read Luke 24:25, we see where Christ rebuked certain disciples who had failed to believe the prophecies concerning His first coming. “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!”

When we study Revelation’s last chapter, it ends with an even more serious warning: “If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book” 22:19.

It is very vital for both Jewish and Gentile believers to understand these very important words, since the warning was also given to the Jewish people in the Old Testament. “You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you” Deuteronomy 4:2

As believers we need to read the Bible, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help us understand – “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God” James 1:5. We need to believe God’s inerrant Word, and obey the divinely inspired prophecies, as well as all the other revelations of the Holy Scripture.

David prayed “Open my eyes that I may behold wonderful things in your law.” When we hunger and thirst and express our sincere desire for the Holy Spirit to teach us, we are opening ourselves to receive true riches that only the Spirit can give.

We need to be very careful not to pay attention or be led into man-made traditions or false prophetic teachings. We are to abide only by the Word of God and need to dedicate time to search the scriptures carefully. Remember if anyone “adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.”

Today as throughout history, there are “Christians”, especially among scholars who say they believe the Bible, but are nevertheless quick to adapt their own interpretations of Scripture to the latest speculations, or feel the need to add or change God’s Word. Beware this is an insult to our Creator.

As Paul was saying farewell to Ephesus he told them that he did “not hesitate to proclaim to (them) the whole will of God” (Acts 20:27). If we desire to honor our Maker, then clearly that is what we must teach with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock – Revelation 3:20

THE APOSTATE CHURCH

“Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:17)

The church has changed so much in recent years and has “left her first love”. An astounding number of churches today, teach doctrines of demons (1 Timothy 4:1 – “But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons”).

We see in Revelation Christ’s rebuke of the church at Laodicea, the “lukewarm” church, which reflects the likeness of the church of the last days. (Revelation 3:16 – ‘So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth’).

The candlestick of this church is still in place (note Revelation 1:20 – “As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches” and in (Revelation 2:5  – ‘Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place–unless you repent”), but it has become a neutral church, “neither cold nor hot” (Revelation 3:15“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot”).

The reason for its lukewarm witness is because it has become “rich, proud and increased with goods”. The churches may have acquired large and beautiful facilities, developed special programs of many kinds, featured a variety of theatrical performances, and even gained a measure of political power. Yet, Christ calls it poor, blind and naked!

Not all churches become like this, of course, but the apostasy of the end times is leading many away from “our first love”, and that is the real danger. The desire for large congregations can easily lead to compromising biblical standards of doctrine and practice. Paul instructs Timothy to “remain in Ephesus, in order to instruct certain men NOT to teach strange doctrines” (1 Timothy 1:3)

The warnings to the churches shows us that the development of such complacency in any church, be it large or small, is the neglect of these three doctrines – the sufficiency of Christ, the inerrant authority of God’s Word, and the special creation of all things by God.

The letter to this church ends with the sad picture of Christ standing at its door, seeking admission (v. 20 – ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.) and continues in (v. 22 – “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says unto the churches”.

A MAN OR WOMAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART – WORSHIP

When Paul received his sight, he also received spiritual insight into the Person of Jesus Christ.

His entire life and preaching from that point on were totally consumed with Jesus Christ and the fact that His sacrifice on Calvary completely restored our fellowship with the Father.

Upon his encounter with the Son of God; Paul reached the bedrock of life’s true meaning, he knew why he was created.  Paul knew that he was created to be a friend and a child of God, and to worship Him “in spirit and in truth.” “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” 1 Corinthians 2:2.

For centuries, “It if finished” were the words that millions of confused, sin weary people had longed to hear. Paul never again allowed anything to attract and hold the attention of his mind and heart except the face of Jesus Christ.

Jesus promised us in the beatitudes: “blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God” – “blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled.” Matthew Chapter 5

We will live in victory, joy and peace when we learn to maintain a strong spirit of worship in our lives. The lasting characteristic of a spiritual man or woman is the ability to understand correctly the meaning of the Lord Jesus Christ in their lives and the ability to explain the purposes of God to others.

The overruling passion of their life is Jesus Christ. Whenever you see this quality in a person, you know that he or she is truly a man or a woman after God’s own heart. Acts 13:22

When we are in the presence of true men and women of God, there is a fragrance, an aroma of worship and Jesus is always the center of attention.

Mary of Bethany; saw and knew the real Jesus Christ, as few people ever have. When Mary anointed Jesus prior to His sacrificial death and burial, most everyone in the room was shocked that she would waste so much on someone who the world valued so little.

But Mary got it right, she knew why she was created; the fragrance of her sacrifice filled the house and the sweet aroma of her worship and love continues to enrich our lives today.

We must never allow anything to divert us from the worship of Jesus Christ. It is the true test of whether we are Spirit filled or not. To be unspiritual means that other things have a growing fascination for us and worship is no longer a priority.

Jesus left all of the beauty, the comfort and worship of heaven, He came to earth to live with poverty, ridicule and hatred:  He became the only acceptable sacrifice for our sins when He was tortured to death at Calvary, an amazing concept; the King giving His life to save prisoners, rebels and slaves.

When we get a glimpse of the tremendous price that Jesus paid for our redemption at Calvary, we will live in adoration and worship of Him from morning till night and even in our times of rest.

COME OUT AND BE SEPARATE – 2 Corinthians 6:17

Here the caution or exhortation itself, which is not to mingle with unbelievers, not to be unequally yoked with them, “Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?”  Corinthians 6:14

 A. In stated relations. It is wrong for good people to join in with the wicked and profane; because these walk in different ways which will produce trouble and grief. Relations that are our choice must be chosen carefully; and it is good for those who are children of God to join with those who are so likewise; because there is more danger that the bad will damage the good than hope that the good will benefit the bad.

B. What Paul is saying, is: That we should not yoke ourselves in religious friendship and acquaintance with wicked men and unbelievers. Though we cannot completely avoid seeing, hearing and being with such people, yet we should never choose them as friends.

C. Much less should we join in religious communion with them. We must not join with them in their idolatrous services, nor concur with them in their false worship, nor any abominations; we must not interconnect the table of the Lord and the table of devils, the house of God and the house of Rimmon.

The apostle gives several good reasons against this corrupt mixture.

1. It is an absurdity, “Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?” – 2 Corinthians 6:14-15. It is an unequal yoking of things together that will not agree together; it is was just as bad as for the Jews to have ploughed with an ox and an ass or to have sown different sorts of grain intermixed. What an absurdity is it to think of joining righteousness and unrighteousness, or mingling light and darkness, fire and water, together!

Believers are, and should be, righteous; but unbelievers are unrighteous. Believers are made light in the Lord, but unbelievers are in darkness; and what comfortable communion can these have together?

Christ and Satan are contrary one to the other; they have opposite interests and designs, so it is impossible that there be any agreement between them. It is absurd, therefore, to think of enlisting under both; and, if the believer has part with an unbeliever, he is bringing Christ and Belial together.

2. It is a dishonor to the Christian’s profession. “Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE” – 2 Corinthians 6:16. Christians should be in reality, the temples of the living God, dedicated to, and employed for, the service of God, who has promised to reside in them, to dwell and walk in them, to stand in a special relation to them, and take special care of them, that he will be their God and they shall be His people. Now there can be no agreement between the temple of God and idols. There is not to be real fellowship between true believers and false teachers.

Idols are rivals with God for his honor, and God is a jealous God, and will not give His glory to another.

3. There is a great deal of danger in communicating with false religions and idolaters, danger of being defiled and of being rejected; so the exhortation is: “Therefore, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE,” says the Lord. “AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN; and I will welcome you”-  2 Corinthians 6:17. Here Paul is saying to come out from among them, and keep at a distance, to be separate, as one would avoid those who have leprosy or the plague, for fear of getting infected, and not to touch the unclean thing, lest we be defiled.

Who can touch tar, and not be tarnished by it? We must take care not to defile ourselves by speaking with those who corrupt themselves with sin; this is the will of God, as we hope to be received, and not rejected, by Him.

4. It is total ingratitude to God for all the favors he has bestowed upon believers and promised to them, “And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me, says the Lord Almighty” – 2 Corinthians 6:18. God has promised to be a Father to them, and that they shall be his sons and his daughters; and is there a greater honor or happiness than this?

How ungrateful is it of those who have been granted to be “sons and daughters”, who have joy and dignity, that they should degrade and shame themselves by mingling with wicked religious unbelievers!

“If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.” 1Timothy 6:3-5

“Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work.” – 2 John 1:7-11

The nature of the deceivers is that are willing to “go beyond” or “go ahead” of the doctrine of Christ. To be a disciple of Christ, one must “abide” – “continue to be present” – in the teaching of the Father. Those who are false teachers will not continue in the teachings of the Father but make for themselves their own law. Jesus made mention of this in Mark 7:7 – “And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.”

We must not permit false teachers and members of the cults: Jehovah’s Witness, Mormons, Catholics the Emergent Church or any false teacher to influence us, or our families and friends.

“Thus you are to be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine.” – Leviticus 20:26

All things are possible to him who believes – Mark 9:23

Right after the transfiguration, Jesus encounters a man who came to Him asking Him to cure his demoniac son because the disciples could not help him. After Jesus set the demoniac free, the disciples came to Jesus privately asking Him “Why could we not drive it out?” – And Jesus said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.  [“But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”] Matthew 17:20-21

Every day it becomes more and more crucial that we have faith and that we increase our faith. That is why we need to always ask for more faith as we pray.

God takes the tiniest bit of faith we have and makes it grow into something big when we act on it. The Bible says that “God has dealt to each one a measure of faith” Romans 12:3. We already have some faith to start with. When we step out in that faith, God increases our faith.

Think about what promise of God would you like to claim in faith? What would you like to see accomplished in your life, or in the life of someone you know, that would require a prayer of great faith? Ask God to take that little seed and grow it into a giant tree of faith so you can see these things come to pass.

Lord I know that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” Hebrews 11:1. Please increase my faith so that I can pray in power. Give me faith to believe for the requests that I ask for others and also for my personal needs. I don’t want to see a necessity and then not have faith strong enough to pray and believe for the situation to change.

I know that doubt is sin and I do not want to hinder what you Lord want to do in me and through me because of unbelief. Increase my faith daily so that I can move mountains in Your name because your Word says that “All things are possible to him who believes.”

“AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE.” Hebrews 10:17

The Lord, in fulfillment of His covenant of grace, treats His children as if they never sin. According to the biblical passage once you are saved and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, God sees our sin, whatever its gravity, as if they had never existed, as if they were erased from His memory. The pages are white, blotted out and there is no sin registered. What a great miracle of grace!

But how can it be for one whose works have been crimson like sin might be made “white as snow “? That seems impossible! He or she would need to be “born again.” This would require a great miracle – an investment of time – and the eradication of all past sins.

The mercy of God works wonders that surpass all miracles. Our God knows nothing of our sin after Jesus Christ has ratified His covenant. We are accounted as His children and He regards us as righteous in making us as if we were perfect and holy. Moreover, He puts us in positions of trust, makes us guardians of His honor, treasures and of His Gospel.

We are considered worthy and He gives us a ministry. This is the clearest evidence that He does not remember our sins. When we forgive our enemies, we take time in placing our trust in them; we judge that it could be unwise. But the Lord forgets our sins and treats us as if we had never offended Him.

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool.” Isaiah 1:18

The amazing thing is that “What is impossible with men is possible with God – said Jesus” Luke 18:27

What seems incredible human wisdom is entirely reasonable to the God of creation. He has allowed man freedom to sin (so that he too could be free to choose the law), it can never fail in its creative purpose. “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men” (1 Corinthians 1:25).

This divine wisdom is centered in the sacrificial death and victorious resurrection of Christ, our Creator and Redeemer, who “loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood” (Revelation 1:5). As a result, now our “reasonable service” to Him is for each of us to offer ourselves to Him as “a living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1).

Today, that mercy makes me live in harmony with that forgiveness and I try to do everything that pleases my Lord.

Lord, thank you for forgiving me. I want to live close to you in thanksgiving for forgetting my sins and I want to walk more like Christ every day. Amen.

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life or another inch to his height? Matthew 6:27

I have learned that I have to stop worrying about things over which I have no control.  I also realize that many of us worry needlessly and we all need to stop this. One of the things that we have no control over is how other people feel about us; even within our own families. Because of an incident or a poor choice that may have happened years ago or last week, someone has decided that he or she has to distance themselves from us.

What control do you actually have over how someone else feels? A mature Christian loves a person where they are and we come to the reality that we cannot change them, only God can. Your obsessing over something you can not change will not add one day to your life or make the problem go away. Re-living an incident over and over through the re-telling of the story in your mind will not change the facts, but will add to the hurt.

Jesus built a bridge with a cross to help us find truth, healing, recovery and forgiveness.  He has shown us how to cross that deep divide from sin, hurt, and pain to forgiveness and peace.  There is hope, ask God to help you and if you need to, seek godly council from your pastor or someone that is grounded in the Word of God. Don’t just pretend that your pain doesn’t exist.  It won’t just disappear.  You need to invite God your Creator into your life and share your problems with Him.  He loves you and cared about you so much that He sent His only Son to come to this world to teach and die for us to pay the penalty for our sins. Thank you Lord!

Today, keep yourself focused on Kingdom work that God has called you to. You can make an eternal difference today in many lives around you for the cause of Jesus Christ if you will just let go and let God be God. He is not just the Creator; He is also the One who restores relationships and people.

“And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” Matthew 21:22

“And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” Matthew 21:22

When a person is born again, the life of the Son of God is born in him and he is filled with the Holy Spirit. Prayer is vital in the life of the saint and through prayer he can nourish or starve his new life in Christ. When we pray, it is like watering a garden; we nourish our spirit and soul by being in the presence of the Lord.

Many look upon prayer as a means of getting things, but from God’s perspective it is a way of getting to know Him better.  Jesus said: “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to whim who knocks it will be opened.” Our faith is to be like that of a little child, but how many of us ask like a child? Our Lord says – “Except you become as little children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” In the kingdom of heaven, there is joy, peace and trust. We need to approach the throne of God with total faith and need to give Jesus Christ an opportunity to show us what He wants to do in our lives.

It is unfortunate that people many times will not pray or ask unless they are at their wits’ end. A person needs to learn to speak to God at all times and not only when they get into trouble. Many times when we get into difficulty, we seek the advice of others instead of seeking God’s guidance. The best counsel we can get is by humbling ourselves before our heavenly Father and asking Him to restore our fellowship with Him. We should always come to God first with our problems which He is so gracious to listen to and the Lord will guide us when we spend time in His presence. We need to realize that as long as we are self-sufficient, and do not ask God for anything, we end up failing miserably.

An intimate fellowship through prayer is what changes a person, and this in turn gives them the strength through the Holy Spirit to change things. Prayer alters things internally which are expressed externally by our attitude and conduct.

When we do not pray, what suffers is the life of the Son of God in the believer, which is nourished not only by food, but by prayer and the reading of His Word. MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.

Thank you Lord for the desire to stay in constant fellowship with You through prayer. Amen

BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT – Ephesians 5:18

Efésios 5 vs 18 - For all 3 pages

“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,” Ephesians 5:18

The Apostle Paul in his letters speaks of the need to live victoriously and how to live well and avoid the excesses of the flesh, with the infilling of the Holy Spirit. The only way to keep sin out of our life is by being filled with the Holy Spirit. Today and every day, I want to be so filled with the Spirit.

Being filled with the Spirit should not be a mystery, but a reality desired by every Christian. We were made vessels to be filled by God. He promises to live in us and to bring abundance in everything we do. When we receive Jesus in our hearts as Lord and Savior, He promises to never leave us or forsake us. He wants to dwell in all areas of our lives. How many times though He is not able, because we have not made a place for Him, and our life is full of so much mundane garbage. So we must clean our lives and leave the heart ready for it to be filled by the Holy Spirit.

If we are filled with the Spirit then we will be rid of every known sin in our lives and we understand the Word of God and are obedient to His teachings. The Word of God brings conviction and repentance to the Christian life. As a Christian I should want to have an abundant life with the fullness and blessing of the Lord. I am at awe to know that God has chosen me to be the temple of His Spirit. Every day I make my life completely available for the Holy Spirit to fill me with His power and presence.

Lord Thank you for your Holy Spirit. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a temple of Your Holy Spirit. Today I want to be filled with your presence and your power to cope with life with full and complete victory in You. For too long other things have filled my life but now I want to be filled with Your love and Your power. Amen.
