GROWING IN CHRIST – 2 Peter 3:18

The Bible teaches that the Christian life is one of constant growth. When you are born again, you are born into God’s family. When this occurs, God’s purpose is that you grow and become mature in Christ. In 2 Peter 3:18, the Bible says: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.”

To grow implies to develop, increase in wisdom, expand knowledge, to grow in awareness.

For one to grow properly in the knowledge of Christ there are certain things that must be practiced for us to grow in spiritual maturity.

We need to read the Bible daily and hide God’s Word in our heart. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tell us that, All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Please do not be content to just skim through the Bible merely to satisfy your conscience. We need to take time to hear what God is saying to us as we read His Word.

We need to learn the secret of prayer. Prayer is communicating with our heavenly Father. Jesus said: “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (John 14:14). Every prayer that we pray will be answered. Sometimes the answer may be “Yes”, sometimes we need to “Wait” for His time, and sometimes the answer will be “No,” because God knows what is best and He has something even better for us, if we trust and obey.

We need to rely constantly on the Holy Spirit for guidance and discernment. The Spirit gives us understanding of the gospel and makes it effective in our life (1 Corinthians 2:4, 12). The Spirit opens our understanding to know God better (Ephesians 1:17), strengthens us in our inner being (Ephesians 3:16), and fills us with the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:17-19).

Christians should attend church regularly. They need one another; we need to gather together to worship God. Remembering that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17), so that we may understand and grow.

New believers grow by going to witness with mature Christian. Witnessing your faith begins with honoring Christ in your heart and as you do this God will prepare your mind and give you the words to bring others to Christ.

Christians should love on another. Jesus said to those who followed Him, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). The greatest demonstration of the fact that we are Christians is that we love one another.

We need to be obedient Christians. Therefore; it is vital to let Christ have first place in all the choices of our life by honoring Him in everything that we think, say and do.

We need to learn to say no to temptation. Temptation is not sin; it is yielding to it that becomes sin. Scripture tells us that, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

We need to reflect Christ in our life. Our life, actions and appearance should exalt what the Gospel teaches and make it attractive to others. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:12-13). How do you know when you are in the presence of a true Christian? Jesus is always the center of attention and a true Christian has a humble spirit.

We should not let our circumstances get us down. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

We must learn to live with gratitude for what God has given us, realizing that the Lord is always with us.“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

We need to respect God with our bodies. We need to remember that, “everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world” (1 John 2:16).

The Bible tells us that Christ himself gave us evangelists, pastors and teachers, to equip His people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ, (Ephesians 4:11-13).

We are praying that you will have the desire to grow in God’s knowledge and grace.
