“Lord, what is man, that You look after him? Or a son of man, that You think of him?” (Psalm 144:3)

In the previous verses David exalted God’s great strength and victory. In light of that, it amazed David that God would have an interest in him or in humanity in general. This verse is a humble, wonder-filled question: despite how small and temporary people are, God still notices them.

David moves from praise for God’s power to wonder at God’s attention to frail human beings. The rhetorical question echoes the biblical theme that humans are small and transient, yet still remembered by God. In context, the question is almost startling because it comes from a warrior-king who has just been describing divine military support.

The population of the world is quickly approaching more than 8.2 billion people in July of 2026, of which you are one individual. If that isn’t humbling enough, consider this: Recent estimates show that approximately 117 billion humans have been born since the dawn of humanity, according to recent estimates from the Population Reference Bureau. And again, each one of just is a single individual in that vast number. Numbers that large make us think of sand of the seashore or stars I the heavens. “Therefore from one man (Abraham), and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore” (Hebrews 11:12).

Yet, in spite of the seeming insignificant of a single human life, Jesus taught that God sees every sparrow that falls and know the number of hairs on your head (Luke 12:6-7).

Such truths made the psalmist, David, look into the heavens and wonder how it could be possible for the mighty God who created the world and everything in it to know and care for him (Psalm 8:3-4). David also wrote that God knows us because He fashioned us, individually, in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13-14).

You may be only one, but you are unique and precious to God because, He created you for Himself.

The Bible uses human smallness to cultivate humility, not hopelessness. Texts like Job 25:4-6, Ecclesiastes 1:2-4, and James 4:14 stress human frailty, brevity, and limited understanding. At the same time, the Bible presents God as mindful, compassionate, and purposeful toward people who seem tiny in comparison with creation. Psalm 8:4 explicitly asks why God is “mindful” of humans, and the topical summaries note that this is meant to show both God’s greatness and the value he gives to humanity.

Humans are created in the image of God, so their smallness in the cosmos coexists with real dignity and worth before their Creator; and deepen our amazement that the Lord still cares for ordinary mortals.

So let us remember that: “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23).
